Complete Rv Solar System With Batteries

What Are Rv Solar Panels

RV Solar 101 : Everything a Beginner Needs to Know !

In the 1800s, scientists observed something called the photovoltaic effect, where some materials would produce an electric charge and current when exposed to sunlight. Attempts were made over the years to create solar engines, as they called them, but most had very low efficiencies. It wasnt until the 1950s that scientists discovered that silicon could create a much more efficient solar panel.

This initial discovery led to the development of solar cells that could harness the suns energy and turn it into electricity. The technology has evolved over the years, but the concept remains the same.

A solar panel is a panel filled with solar cells that capture the suns energy and turn that energy into usable electricity that powers homes, businesses, coffee pots, and, yes your RV!

Lets find out how it all works!

Calculating Energy Generation And Storage Needs

A decent assumption is that a 100-Watt solar panel will generate on average 350 Watt-hours of power per day. However, this will vary significantly by location and time of year. This article by Mortons on the Move explains a way to get a more accurate result by using PVwatts.

Youll also need to know how many batteries youll need to store that amount of power! One 100 ah 12volt Battle Born battery has about 1200 Watt-hours storage capacity.

Keep in mind that your solar panels will only give you the stated number of Watts under perfect conditions. Perfect conditions = direct sun pointing directly at the panel. On a rainy day, you wont get 100 Watts from your 100-Watt solar panel. If youre parking in the shade, you wont get 200 Watts from your 200-Watt solar panel.

Its also challenging to estimate the amount of power youll use on a given day because days are different. You may be outside all day today enjoying nature, and fall into bed and watch 15 minutes of television tonight. Tomorrow could be a rainy day, and youll stay inside your RV, do a lot of work on your laptop, and watch a couple of hours of television in the evening. So estimating high is usually a good idea!

How Is Rv Solar Different From Home Solar

It’s also important to clarify the main differences between how one approaches adding solar to their home and getting solar system for RV. Whereas home solar systems are typically designed to cover all of your home energy needs, RV solar systems are designed to maintain a steady bank of power in your batteries and provide enough power to charge a few appliances in your motorhome.

Do Any Rv Solar Panel Kits Come With Inverter And Battery

Most RV solar panel kits do not come with an inverter or a battery. However, some manufacturers with bundle some of these components together for a more robust system. For instance, one of our favorite companies, Battle Born Batteries, offers camper solar panel starter kits with one of their lithium batteries. However, the inverter is still something youll need to get separately.

If youre looking for an all-in-one solution, you might also want to check out solar generator systems, like the Jackery. These often have built-in inverters that allow you to plug right into them.

Calculating How Much Energy You Use

First, you need to know how much energy you use in a day. There are a couple of ways you can do this. The first involves math. Estimate how much power youll consume while boondocking in your RV by learning what each device or appliance you want to use consumes and multiplying that by the number of hours youll use that device or appliance.

Heres an example: You have one television that consumes 90 Watts. You estimate that youll watch television for approximately two hours per day. So 90W x 2h = 180 Watt/Hours per day

You can do the same for every appliance or device you may want to power as you boondock, and you would add the total of Watt-hours consumed. From there, you can estimate how many panels you need.

What Are The Pros And Cons Of Rigid And Flexible Solar Panels

Go Power Solar Elite Charging System/ Complete RV solar system install

Rigid solar panels are the definition of durability and are typically installed in super sturdy brackets which can be angled to maximize solar gain throughout the year. The rugged and corrosion resistant aluminum framing protects the low-reflectivity tempered glass, improves cell performance, and is simple to maintain — providing decades of quality service. But no one likes the idea of putting holes into the roof of any RV. Besides, rigid panels are relatively heavy. Flexible solar panels, however, are the adaptable and lightweight options providing the same power as their more traditional cousins, and weigh less than a quarter. With the ability to flex up to 248 degrees, they can adapt to almost any curved surface, making them ideal for non-traditional RV shapes or ultra-light vehicles. Their profile is extraordinarily low, only 0.08 inches thick, making these panels easier to tuck away out of site on your roof. Similar weather and waterproofness make them the ideal solution of solar power for campers. In general, the installation of flexible panels is going to be simpler than rigid, and put fewer holes in your roof, which makes them the perfect motorhome solar panels and travel trailer solar panels.

What Are The Differences Between Off

Off-grid systems utilize a battery bank to store energy produced from solar panels. The benefits of off-grid solar systems include having access to power during a blackout, a lower carbon footprint, and the end of monthly utility bills. For those living in a tiny home, cabin, or isolated area or are in an area where they don’t have reliable, steady access to power from the grid, mobile home solar panel kits can be great off-grid solar solutions. It’s always important to properly size and design a solar system, but this is especially the case in off-grid systems where you are 100% relying on your own energy production. You won’t want to be stuck in the dark or cold because you undersized your system. When you’re on-grid, grid-tie solar kit will be one of a few different energy solutions, meaning you won’t need to install as large of a system as you would if you were off-grid. Staying connected to the grid is a great approach to ensuring you can have steady access to electricity and also take advantage of the economic benefits of solar.

Calculate Your Rvs Solar Needs

Before you even consider buying a solar panel , you should figure out how much power your RV needs every day. Calculating your energy needs will give you a better idea of your solar setups final price before you even purchase it. If you draw a lot of electricity, for example, you may need more batteries and more panels than someone who mostly relies on propane.

If you want a precise number, you should look for the wattage draw of all of the appliances you keep in your RV. Then, you can consider switching to equipment with lower energy demands like a solar-powered refrigerator if you want to bring your total wattage draw down.

Additionally, you can check out our guide on how much solar power you need for an RV for an in-depth look at this process.

Consider What Kind Of Solar Charge Controller You Want

The solar charge controller is an integral part of your RV solar system that shouldnt be overlooked. The primary function of a solar charge controller is to monitor your batteries and control how much power goes to them at any given time. For instance, when your batteries hit a full charge, they shouldnt receive any more electricity not only is this dangerous, but itll wear them out much faster, too.

Solar charge controllers come in two main types: MPPT, which is a newer and more advanced protocol, and PWM, which is older and more basic. Well go over the benefits of each of these protocols below.

MPPT

MPPT, or Maximum Power Point Tracking, is a variable protocol that runs your solar panel at its maximum voltage, then converts that maximum voltage down to precisely what your batteries can accept. While MPPT controllers are more expensive and complicated, theyre compatible with a broader range of panels and batteries.

PWM

PWM protocol, while simpler and gentler than MPPT protocol, isnt as efficient as its newer cousin. Because PWM controllers dont convert the resulting voltage, your solar panel and batteries must be compatible if you want them both to work at their maximum capacities.

Start By Calculating Your Power Needs

How much power do you use daily? This will help you determine the size of the solar system you need.

First, find the power rating of the appliances. If the appliance is rated in amps , multiply the amps by the voltage to get the wattage .

The formula P = V x I is used to calculate the wattage.

Multiply the wattage of the appliances by the usage hours to determine the power consumption .

    Appliance/Load Name

Step A: Calculate The Average Daily Watt-Hours

Average Daily Watt-Hours = + DC Daily Wh

    Average Daily Watt-Hours = + 0 Wh

    = 2489 Wh

Step B: Calculate The Battery Bank Capacity

Battery Bank Capacity = Average Daily Wh x Days of Autonomy x Battery Temp Multiplier ÷ DoD

    Battery Bank Capacity = 2489 Wh x 3 Days x 1.00 ÷ 0.8

    = 9334 Wh

Step C: Calculate The Battery Bank Capacity

Battery Bank Capacity = Battery Bank Capacity ÷ Battery Voltage

    Battery Bank Capacity = 9334 Wh ÷ 48 V
